Get More Out of Life – 6 Places Where you Should Listen to Audio Books

Technology is increasingly enriching our lives in ways which only a few years ago we would not have dreamed of. Who would have believed that not only would we slow down the destruction of trees and forests used for making paper and cardboard for hardcover and paperback books by developing the ability to “listen” to our books instead of “reading” them?

Seriously? Oh yes, through the introduction of audio books.

Audio books enable us to do other things at the same time, particularly physical activities for which we do not need our minds, for example household chores, walking the dog, working out, jogging etc. while still listening to the book.

More and more people are seeing the benefits of audio books and are buying their favorite books in this format.

If you are considering trying audio books but maybe still wonder about how and when you would ‘read’ them, here are 6 of places you can enjoy an audio book:

1IN BED – Sometimes we feel unwell or off colour and may just want to spend the day or a few hours relaxing in bed; or maybe we go to bed at night and simply want to lie till until drifting naturally off to sleep.

This is a great time to listen to an audio book: You have no bother with putting on the lights, holding the book, flipping through the pages or the effort of reading the book itself. You just lie there and relax while the entire book is read to you!

2IN THE KITCHEN – while doing household chores such as washing the dishes, general cleaning, or even preparing a meal. Many of us find these tasks somewhat tedious, certainly the chore of washing the dishes.

This is a great time to listen to an audio book because your hands are busy but your mind is receptive; instead of feeling listless and bored you can fill your mind with the pleasure of listening to a book of your choice.

3–GARDENING – Another mainly physical activity when much of the time e.g., weeding, mowing grass etc – we don’t have to tax our brains. You can also listen to audio books while gardening and have the pleasure of your book along with the satisfaction of getting the job done.

4EXERCISING or JOGGING – Weights, aerobics or simply jogging leave your mind wide open but your hands, legs and even your entire body busy. This is a great time to enjoy an audio book.

A lot of us tend to exercise, whether for minutes or even hours while their minds do nothing. But listening to an audio book during this time will ensure you don’t waste those periods of time.

Talk about killing 2 birds with one stone – exercising your body and mind at the same time!

5–COMMUTING – This may be in your car or the bus or train ride to work. Many people lose a great deal of time doing nothing while commuting to and from their jobs – and the sheer boredom of it can make them feel tired and irritable.

Why not use that time to listen to an audio book, especially one that develops your mind and/or improves your professional and business skills? Listening to audio books that improve your skills can significantly help you develop career; more useful than simply sitting there or even listening to music.

6AIR TRAVEL – You may not believe it, but there are people who spend more time in the air (or waiting in airport s!) than on the road. As with more traditional commuting, this can be wasted and frustrating time which can be put to good use.

If you are a regular or even an occasional air traveler, consider the enormous benefits you would get listening to audio books, especially those that can improve your academic or work related skills; or simply listening to a favourite novel. Great distraction for the kids too if they’re travelling with you……

These are just a few situations arising in many of our lives where audio books can provide entertainment and/or the opportunity to improve our professional skills; there are many others which you may well have thought of as you read this text.

Why Should You Listen to Download Audio Books?

There are many different types of audio books around these days, literally something for everybody. Whether you prefer to be engrossed in a spooky tale, a romantic love story, a side-splitting comedy or a gritty crime story, there are thousands of audio books that you can choose from.

There is a lot of difference between reading and listening. Listening makes you feel that you are there and you can enjoy the story more. Perhaps, listening to audio books can bring out the best in books compare to watching films that based on the same books. You can relate to stories in books better using your imagination, something that cannot transfer from books to films (acting, directing, and mostly censoring of films make films somewhat distort from their original books.) If you have never tried an audio book, you really should give it a try!

In some ways, audio books are even better than traditional books. If you want to buy a particular book, you have to traipse around the shops trying to find it or order it on the phone or online and then sit at home awaiting the postman. With an audio book, you can download it immediately. You can decide what book you want to listen to and be listening to it within minutes. You can relax, shut your eyes (something else you can’t do with a conventional book!) and be absorbed in the story. Many audio books feature sound effects so you feel like you are really there.

You can play audio books over and over again and it does not get scruffy like a conventional paper book. An audio book can tell a story much better than a printed book. Imagine hearing a book being read by its author who is reading his words like they were meant to be heard. The characters really come to life in an audio book. If you lend someone a book, you might not get it back. To lend someone an audio book, you just need to copy it onto CDs or a DVD.

You could enjoy the biography of your favorite actress whilst walking the dog or washing the floor. You could listen to a gritty crime drama while driving home from work or in your house. You can relax wherever you are and enjoy your audio book and you can listen in total privacy on your headphones.

There are many other types of audio books apart from fiction. You can learn a foreign language, for example, using an audio book. A conventional book does not explain properly how a word is supposed to be pronounced. You could brush up on some Greek phrases for your vacation this year or learn some handy French or Spanish. Listening to a native speaker pronounce those words and phrases is a million times better than reading them in a book and guessing the right pronunciation.

If you fancy giving up smoking, losing weight or increasing your willpower, there are hypnosis audio books available and they have been scientifically proven to work. You might want to consider audio books for your children so you can either listen to the story together or have lights out early and let them drift off to sleep while listening to their favorite fairy story or exciting adventure.

When you have finished downloading your book, you can play it on your computer speakers, transfer it to your mp3 player or burn it on to a CD for yourself or as a great gift for someone you love. That is how versatile download audio books are.

Listen to Audio Books Online: Better Than Using Your Eyes to Read

It can be quite hard, at least in the beginning, to convince others of the many pleasures to be had when one listens to audio books online. Though when you do this, you are not doing much different as compared to reading with your eyes; you will only be substituting your eyes for your ears and enjoy a narration of the book rather than have to listen to yourself read out (in your mind) the contents of a novel or other book.

Recent Phenomenon

Even though the transition from paperbacks to audio books is a relatively recent phenomenon, there are still many skeptics that doubt that you can get the same kind of enjoyment when you listen to audio books online as you would when physically reading a paperback. What’s even stranger; it seems that young readers are the most skeptical about the enjoyment that one is able to get from listen to audio books online.

However, your grandparents would certainly be more amenable to listening to audio books online because they have grown up listening to stories being narrated on the radio shows of their time. In fact, most of these oldies-but-goldies will readily vouch for the great amount of enjoyment that one is able to get from listening to audio books online.

After all, when you listen to audio books online you can sit down comfortably on your favorite chair, do some small chore while also enjoy being read the contents of an audio book. In many ways, listening to audio books online is much like what many oldies had experienced when the BBC used to narrate many of the well known classics in their various radio programs.

Another benefit to listening to audio books online is that it is the only real source of entertainment for those that are unfortunate enough to have to deal with impaired sights and in fact, the American Congress even had set out its program called “Books for the Adult Blind Project.” In many ways, this initiative laid the ground for future audio books which  books have since been mass manufactured.

With so many notable advancements taking place in modern technology, the audio book online format has become a major driving force in getting people to enjoy listening to audio books online. Even modern pop culture is promoting audio books online and so the market for audio books online grows by the day – making audio books readily available to every man.

You can even get your little children started on listening to audio books online and in fact there are many good reasons why you should look closely at purchasing or renting kid’s audio books online. Today’s modern technology has led many more people to embrace the concept of listening to audio books online and with the widespread availability of such books; the future is really looking rosy for those who are producing audio books.

Audio Book Guide: How To Download and Listen to Audio Books

Digital Audio Books are getting more popular by the day. Weekly, more digital media players are made available and consumers replace their old cassette and CD players with the modern MP3 players- These MP3 players are much smaller and can be loaded with many MegaBytes of content, music and audio books, even videos.

Audio Books are normally encoded in either MP3 or WMA format. Both formats can be played on PC’s, laptops and on Apple computers and most portable media players (MP3 players), like the iPod, Zune, iRiver, Samsung MP3 etc.

Here are a few tips that will help you making the right decisions, when buying your first audio book:

To download large files from the internet, it’s best to have a high speed broadband connection, it can speed up the download considerably. If you are on an slower – ISDN or analog – connection, downloading is still possible. It will just take a bit longer. I suggest you use a download manager to be able to pick up where you were interrupted, should the line go down.

The file size for audio books can vary considerably, depending on the file quality.

Usually audio books are made available by the publishers in several different compressions, making the files smaller. The most compressed format is usually of good, audible, but not excellent, quality, whilst the medium compression will be perfect for most users. The largest files usually provide better than CD quality and can be quite bulky. If you are not sure which format suits your ear most, download all three qualities for testing, then decide what is most convenient for you. When you then buy your next audio book, you’ll know what firle format to download.

The iPod has made media players popular, and a large number of iPods are used by old and young consumers. The questio I’m asked most often is: “Is it possible to transfer audio books to an iPod?”

My answer is a simple “Yes.” It’s a straightforward process: All you have to do is to burn the audio book files to CD first (this is a step we’d always recommend as it is wise to make a physical backup copy of anything you buy just in case your computer ever fails or is stolen) and then rip that CD straight into iTunes, from where it’s transferred to your iPod when you synchronize it.

Burning your audio book files to an audio CD on your computer is quick and easy, particularly if you are using Windows. If you are in doubt how to exactly proceed check for the help page. Audio book stores offer very detailed, step by step desciptions, often illustrated or even as videos, that will help you burn these files on CD.

“How can I test if my equipment will work with audio books” is an other question that is asked often. There is risk free way to find out:

Most audio book stores offer free audio books. So if you’re in doubt whether your system will be able to handle the files and whether the audio books are compatible with the equipment you own, just download one of the free books, and test it.

When you purchase an audio book, you often receive a user name and a password which allows you to download the files and prove that you are the rightful owner of these files. Like this you don’t run the risk of breaking the law. Such audio books have been licensed for sale and have been approved by the publishers and copyright holders. As a paying customer you are entitled to download and listen to these files as often as you wish and on whatever equipment you wish. You can also copy the audio books on CD as backup for yourself and your family. However, like for any other media, it would be illegal to make copies of the files and distribute them widely.

The length of time it will take for an audio book to download will vary greatly depending on what kind of Internet connection you have. Often the audio books are split into several smaller files or parts, especially if the recordings are several hours of listeing pleasure. If you have a broadband connection it will take just a few minutes per part. This makes it easier to download the book. Even if you are on a slow connection you can start listening to the first part whilst the other files are downloading.
